Interesting to see farrin views on the visit. Most of people I know that share the local view are vexed at the money spent and the amount of people outplaced during the visit. Almost everyone agrees that the visit is wonderful....just some of the logistics suck. I don't follow politricks so I don't have an opinion.....matter of fact, watching a 30 second video of Obama saying his whagwan Jamaica speech was the first time I heard his voice and had to ask if that was his accent. Wondering if we had a total cost for US and JA taxpayers for the visit if it would alter people's views of the visit. The suffering in the streets of Kingston and around the island...but I'm not into politricks, just human rights.

The Jamaican people are very excited to receive Pres. Obama.

The last President to visit was Regan. Before him Kennedy.

Pres. Obama being black makes it even more special.

This is a special 24 hours for Jamaicans ... I feel it too

Now, that is a whole lot to say without really saying much of anything. No disrespect. Just that responding to this seems important so let me try.

I don't think anyone is really into "politricks". "Politricks" is actually politics gone awry and nobody is into that, right? I understand your point, I think, and the suffering in the streets of Kingston and around the island is a human rights issue but President Obama's visit will not fix this. The benefits derived from his visit (i.e. lower electricity prices, foreign aid, etc.) will, if applied properly by Jamaica's government, better the human condition all around the island.

Most of the people I know are well aware that a lot of money is being spent that Jamaica frankly doesn't have with all the austerity programs in place but the old saying "it takes money to make money" applies here. A lot of monetary benefits will come from this visit from aid and economic opportunities that will far exceed the money used as seed to get the rewards. Yes, this visit is not only wonderful but historic on a lot of levels. Chinas growing interest in the Caribbean is a lot of the reason it took place in the first place.

Unlike the US where citizens are not that much into Politics, Jamaicans are surprisingly educated on "whaagwan" in their country. People will grumble about the cost but, in the long run, I don't actually think the cost will alter people's view of this visit.
