Traveller Cheques

After reading several posts here re money issues...am thinking about bringing traveller cheques...can they be used as in the old days at grocery stores etc? Any problems changing them into J$ at the Cambio? I want to avoid the long bank lines if possible? Thanks all!

Cambios no longer accept TC's. You would have to go to the bank with them.

Is there a bank in Negril that will accept TCs? (Never been to Negril outside of an AI and will be going in a few weeks).

Always brought travelers checks until 2 yrs. ago when I was told my hotel no longer accepts them and the cambio will not cash them. I had been in Negril just 2 months before this and there was no problem at that time. I had to go to the bank in town to cash them. The place was packed so I thought I'd do better in the senior citizens line. What a mistake. I think they meant the tellers are senior citizens. It was over an hour and there were only 3 people ahead of me.

I love Traveller Cheques (Checks) ever since I had my hotel room broken into while in Hawaii a few years back, they stole the envelope with all my traveller's cheques in them. I had all my money back in my pocket that same day.

Sad to hear that they are no longer that easy to use. It was great when the cambios accepted them with little or no fuss.

Oh, NM! You made my night! This is too funny! Welcome to Jamaica! Try opening a bank account in JA on your next trip. That's a trip and half, and at least 10 hours!

I brought TC's 2 years ago and couldn't find a place to exchange them. Using a bank ATM, specifically the Scotia downtown, as worked out very well for me. The exchange rate is great. Just go there every couple of days to refill. You can usually take out $300 USD at a time, unless the bank is low on USD. I've stayed a total of 28 days in Negril and the least I could take out at a time was roughly $200 USD.

The banks and other places in the States that used to issue Travelers Checks now issue pre-paid debit cards. So banks will insure them like travelers checks, you have to ask which one do and which ones don't.
