Thanks beachgirl. Was that a xmas special or something?? I figured there were probably holiday sales so that is why I was wondering what the new 2013 prices were. I am not against getting a Lime phone if the price is right! Sounds like a great deal for phone/card/minutes for under $20 US!!

I have a basic Digicel phone and paid $45.00 for everything over a year ago. I buy credits on line every other month, $5.50 US, so I can keep the phone active. When I arrive in MoBay I turn on the phone and the credits load up. When I left in in December i still had $2500J's credit. Great way to travel. If any one wants to borrow the phone for their travels let me know.

Thanks rronnie....After hearing such different prices in this thread I'm wondering how Lime can sell something that runs $20 while Digicel sells it for $45??? Is Digicel that much better or is Lime trying to get a bigger chunk of the market share by slashing their prices?? Is it brand loyalty?? Things that make you go hmmmm....

    * For LIME topups, a no-service-fee alternative to EZEtop is https://www.etopuponline.com/lime/start.

    * Last year Digicel came out with an option for lower rates after Lime lowered theirs: "Digicel, in a media release, said consumers can opt in to its newest promotion by dialling156# for free from their Digicel handset and then pressing 'send'." http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/2...ead/lead1.html

Interesting article Lola. Checking out some of the comments to that article clouds the issue on Digicel vs. Lime even more for me. Seems like its more of a war on call/texting prices then anything that will drive which provider is actually the cheapest for us tourists. I think my vote will be for whomever gives me the best cell service when I need it!! I don't want to be somewhere on the island and have 'no service" when I really need to get a hold of someone.....There was an article in the Gleaner today http://jamaica-gleaner.com/latest/article.php?id=42335 it looks like Digicel is having problems with calls going directly to vmail

Not sure about market share or brand loyalty, but in my opinion Digicel has much better coverage than Lime. Last two trips we were in Kingston, Portland, Negril, and Mandeville and noticed that Lime's service is much spottier than Digicel. It wasn't as bad in Kingston or Negril, but was much more noticeable while traveling. We even had trouble getting good reception in our room at the Beach Club Condos in Negril summer before last. We had to go out on the balcony to get a good signal when we were in the main building that also houses the Beach Club Resort (old Mariners) front desk.

I would recommend getting a cheap unlocked tri or quad band phone, or having an old phone unlocked like others have already mentioned. We have done this the past three years with two different unlocked phones and didn't have any trouble whatsoever. We did however have one of the cheap phones break on us only after two weeks of use.

I have very little use for talking on any phone but Bet said I had to have a cell phone. I bought a cheap used Motorola unlocked Quad band and bought an ATT pay as you go plan & SIM. I bought a LIME sime several years ago to use when in Jamaica.
We have been going to Jamaica once a year. A few weeks before we go I E-TOP up my Lime SIM with US $5.00 to test if it is still active. Then put the SIM in the phone. Within an hour I get message on the Lime SIM that the top up was successfull. Then just before we leave I add some more to it. When we get on the plane to head back home I take the Lime SIM out and store it away till next trip. I do not add minutes at all the rest of the year and it is still good to go next year.
I just did the E-Top test for our Feb trip and sure enough it was still active. I don't have to worry it from when we leave Ja till just before we return.
As far as price per minute of call etc... we don't use it enough to be overly concerned but I don't think it's too bad.

My old Motorola I picked up for $9.95 crapped out about 6 months ago and I did some searching and found a new dual SIM quad band phone from cellphoneshop or something like that for $31.00 shipped. I figured why not. It is cheap but it is more than I need for a phone and I have both SIM cards loaded and ready to go. Now when I get to Ja I just deactivate my AT&T SIM and activate my LIME SIM .

I have done the unlock phone, buy sim card and minutes in the past and it works fine at a reasonable cost. However, last reach my airport transfer Alfred's simply lent me a phone at no cost to me. All I had to do was buy some minutes. I understand some resorts also either loan or rent phones which is hassle free and economical. For me that's the way to go, if possible.
