    Re: Russians in Negril

Miss Anna is spot on. Russians vacation in the Mediterranean, The Black Sea, and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. Sharm is a lot like Negril with a beach and cliffs along the Red Sea. There are many villas bars and clubs in Sharm and it is beautiful. Problem is that it is in Egypt, and with all of the turmoil in the middle east, Negril is looking better for Russian vacationers all of the time. I have friends who live in Sharm that are from Estonia and I have plotted out a trip for some of their friends who took their vacation in Negil. They enjoyed it very much and have returned. I have also met vacationers from Slovenia in Negril. Russians have money and know how to spend it. Keeping a good vodka on ice or putting some Ruski type meals on the menu is a good idea for anyone who wants their business.

Guys, have you noticed that places in Negril that cater for italians serve pasta and places that cater for americans serve burgers? When you fly over for a weekend you can survive on jerk chicken alone and call it exotic experience, but when you you come down for 10 days its not so easy. Plus I'm not demanding anything, just pointing the way to make extra $$$.

We were just talking to a long time Jamaican business owner here & he fully agreed with you. And, yes he had pointed out that they had done this for the Italians etc years ago...he also said he would love the opportunity to enjoy some Russian food as well. So, good post...thanks Miss Anna.

Honestly... I think the only thing on her list I have never had there is sour cream... And that's probably because I order local food when I jamaica.

And really... The comment that burgers are for Americans and pasta is for Italians borders on ignorant. I guess as soon as the hotels realize I am an American of German descent, with a Jewish wife that it should be Wiener schnitzel and gefelltie fish all around.

If you want the food from your home, stay home. Don't ruin my paradise.

The Russians might like Ital Stews etc. Plenty cabbage, beets, Irish potato, pork on the island. Black tea too.
Easy to accomodate their tastes and the smart business folks will.

Hussyband...Miss Anna is simply suggesting/hoping to have the option once in awhile of food they are most familiar with in Russia.
I don't believe anyone is suggesting that Italians only eat pasta, Americans only eat hamburgers...it was a simple example of common food choices in the respective countries.
If you ask the old time hoteliers...pasta was put on the local menus from the suggestion of their Italian guests.

And, you can get wiener schnitzel at a couple of locations here...I would try the German Bar at Mary Bay...

Great. Now I can look forward to having mediocre borscht, blintzes and pickled fish in Negril, just like in St. Louis. Anna, perhaps there is so much Italian food in Negril, not so much because of the huge amount of Italian tourists, but rather because everyone except Russians feel that pasta is fantastic? And the fact that everyone loves pizza? There isn't any real Italian cuisine in Negril anyway. Has anybody had a good scallopini or osso bucco in Negril? Or even seen it on a menu? Gnocchi? Its mostly pasta with cream and cheese and pizza in Negril, Anna. And only one really good Neapolitan style pizza, anyway....But, you may have a point....more than one place, regrettably, serves nachos. Negril Nachos.....oxymoronic, if you ask me...

    Rob posts on another thread:
When one thinks of a holiday vacation in Negril, the first thing that comes to mind is our world famous Seven Mile Beach! The soft white sand, the calm crystal clear Caribbean Sea, the sweet sounds of reggae music and bars and restaurants dotting the entire length make for memories that last a lifetime!
    NOT RUSSIAN CUISINE!!!!
