Thread: NBCC - The rest of the story/after story from Mrs. Gaynair

Good idea Lovely, unfortunately not feasable. Mrs. Gaynair manages about 30 or so condos of the almost 90 (86, I think) condos/rooms located on the property. Many condos are Jamaican owned, many Jamaican families stay there on their vacations. That means their relatives will be there to visit when the family is in Negril. Also, when a visitor registers their local "friend", they are a guest, not a visitor. Probably they will target the person they are visiting, not other guests.

More than once I've been in the lobby there on my computer in the early a.m. when a hotel - not NBCC - guest came down to report a theft. They had invited someone they met in a club to their room. When they dozed off (passed out perhaps), they woke up to find valuables gone. Then they complain that their room was robbed & blamed the hotel for allowing them to bring a guest in! Even though this could be prevented by what you suggest, odds are once they get what they want from the woman who picked them up at the club, they'll be gone, not looking for other victims. At least I hope so.

Again, it sounds bad but it is what it is. So that being said, a lot of them are naive to what really goes on with these guys and they think they are the "one", the love of these guys life. So Rob is correct because Yes, it IS what it seems. The problem is, everyone else knows what it is, and usually it's the woman that sees nothing.
This observation is not gender-dependent. Plenty of men want to be with a fit, beautiful woman, but don't possess the looks/personality/money to pull it off. Some of theses guys, like the gals. get overwhelmed with feminine attention. I suspect an equal number of men have been ripped off by their JA "GF's", but being male, they are hesitant to report to the world that they have been ripped off by a woman, for fear of ridicule. Plus, I suspect a male may be more likely to take the attitude that the loss in the theft is part of the price paid for sex(rationalization) and therefore not report it.

However, I doubt the male is rarely surprised their JA GF is in it for the $$$$, while it seems the female often is.....vive la difference!

Wow!! What gets me is lovely this isn't your country or mine.. "locals" should be allowed to stay where ever they want. They have the right to stay at any hotel or establishment they want. They shouldn't be banned.. They live here we just vacation. Yea the chick made a dumb ass mistake. Yea she shouldn't be running around to all the sites lying about what really happened. Yea she got conned. You live and you learn. Hopefully she learned.

I am concerned, that I can be staying somewhere, and because of someone's else's lack of judgement, I could be harmed or robbed as well... I truly feel bad for Mrs.Gaynair,-who I have never even met- but please, change your policy immediately so history does "NOT" repeat itself. Don't be motivated by $, to just rent your rooms, learn from this tragic situation, and implement "NEW" policies, so this never happens again,

I have to disagree with this suggestion Lovely and the reason being is that your idea of banning all locals seems to me to be unfair and makes them seem outcasts and unwanted like they are all bad and I think that creates even more amniosity.

When I travel to Jamaica I have extended family living there who are very good to myself and my family and many times we will go to pick them up in a bus and bring them back to Negril for a long weekend and pay to have them stay with us as a little holiday and a thankyou to them before we all go to stay at their homes.

No local Jamaican who has ever come to stay with me has ever stolen anything or caused any problems at all not a single one.

So I do not think banning all Jamaicans from hotels in their country is the answer I think it is very unfair.

I realise there are thiefs but I have stayed in places worldwide where tourists thief from each other too.

This "half" of a story we were told later emerged that there were preventative measures which could have possibly stopped this robbery from happening.A lot of things could have stopped it

((Thanks Yvonne for clearing up the issue that they do have working locks))

I have heard of a couple of thefts down there though , perhaps some are in the hotel section and the lock situation is worse there?

Either way I am saddened to hear that because of lack of using common sense that it has made someone think along the lines of lets ban all Jamaicans.

What next? Ban them from the beach? Ban them from the concerts? From the area?
If someone does not want to be around Jamaicans they could always not choose to go to Jamaica or stay at the ultru secluded all inclusives where you would only see Jamaicans in a work setting.

As a mother of a child who has Jamaican roots and my direct family ~ Husband and all of my inlaws all being either Locals or from Jamaican background. If a hotel in Jamaica said only I was welcome due to where I was born or colour of skin or whatever else they wished to base it on.There is no way I would even go near a place like that.I find something very wrong with the picture of banning a countries own people from facilities on offer there.
There are thiefs and drugs in my own country but I do not expect to be banned from using local hotels and spas and restaurants because of them as I am not one. What would you say if your country started banning you from places? How would you feel?

It reminds me of a story I was once told about an excellent theme park in a place full of LOCAL children, It was a deprived area and was priced so high that all of the local children could only peep through the bars at all of the tourist children having fun. Most were hungry and not clothed too well but the owner got his land cheap and he was in it for the profit. They did not ban all locals but it was priced so high that none of them could afford it and it saddened me to think that people can knowingly hurt others like this and this is why I regularly do volunteer or charity work for children or LOCALS put in these situations.A simple solution could have been to have a free or very cheap day once every month for local people.
Kool runnings waterpark in Negril often has days where a lot of Locals come and enjoy the facilities.I do not know what they are charged but I have seen Jamaicans coming in big buses from Kingston and I enjoyed watching the children win more free tickets on stage in a dancing competition for the next time they came to visit.

I spent the day in the waterpark with bus loads of people from Kingston and I also stayed at a Breezes hotel that allowed locals to purchase weekend passes at a reduced price. That too was absolutely jam packed with Jamaicans and mostly from Kingston.

I was not robbed, I was not hurt and I chatted and enjoyed the fun along with the rest of them.

So I do not know what the answer is but BAN ALL JAMAICANS is a pretty low answer to me,That is a direct insult to Jamaicans and I cannot explain how it feels to be stood with a group of my own blood and family and me be welcome somewhere and they not and there is a contract put in front of me to sign explaining that I will be welcome but they will not.Would I sign? Yes ~ but not my name

It is not fair to say ban every single Jamaican because one woman had a local staying over -forgot to lock the door and got robbed. No one has even had a flicker of a thought that there could be tourists staying there who saw an opportunity and were not the most perfect of people and just took the opportunity to steal? It happens and a lot. While this story does sound like the Jamaican was possibly involved he could also have been very mad as he was not involved and really wanted his stuff back and could not afford to replace it.But I guess nobody has even given that a thought just lets ban them all.

Stories like the one we heard about the theft (an obvious "agreement" between two consenting adults, and I am not JUDGING IT, ce la vie, but I would not myself ENGAGE in it) casts doubt on the real relationships that can develop between FRIENDS of the opposite sex in Jamaica.

The BIGGEST crime would be to judge everyone with the "arranged relationship" brush, or as Tic said, to jump to that conclusion every time. To do so, and ban a Jamaican from spending time anywhere in their own country because SOME people engage in those paid relationships, is not a tolerable offense. I understand why it's hard not to judge, but I hate the concept of relationships in Negril between a dark-skinned person and a light-skinned person being suspect. If I get that feeling at a resort, I won't stay there.
